Prabir Ghosh is the 64 year-old chief of The Science and Rationalists' Association of India and the scourge of every guru, godman, fakir, faith-healer and fat swami for a hundred miles of his home in Calcutta. He is the author of over 30 Bengali-language best sellers, among them such classics as 'Nothing Supernatural' and 'Why I Don’t Believe In God'. Despite nine assassination attempts, including a hit-and-run attack by a man on an Enfield motorbike that left Ghosh with four broken ribs, he has waged a lifelong campaign to expose Indian gurus for what he believes they are: charlatans. ‘There was a time when there were a lot of godmen in Kolkata,’ says Ghosh with a schoolboy grin. ‘Not any more.’ A short biography of rationalist Prabir Ghosh Teacher Subhendu Roy instilled in him, the interest in sociology and in the power of political motivation behind all human endeavours. Since 1985 Prabir has thrown a unique challenge of 2.3 million Indian rupees ($ 50,000) towards any Godman, or person who claims to possess miracle powers, and to astrologers who claim they can foresee people's future. Prabir rubbishes such claims and as a social responsibility uses the challenge as a weapon to combat the corruptions of the society like Godmen and Astrologers. Since 1985 more than 500 astrologers and 250 Godmen have come face to face with Prabir in front of the media, and have faced defeat. The Science and Rationalists’ Association of India (SRAI) was established on March 1, 1985 to fight against superstition, Godmen, Astrologers and claim of paranormal phenomenon. The organization is made up of like minded people coming from different professions. On Dec 10, 1991 another organization, Humanists' Association (HA) was started as a wing or division of SRAI, to fight the causes of human injustice, and violation of humanity, anywhere. The organizations are not affiliated to any political party. Their aim is to eradicate superstition and blind faith, which include religious fanaticism , astrology , caste-system, spiritualism and numerous other obscurantist beliefs. Their view is that rational way of thinking shall be spread among the people as against spiritual or religious teachings, and that alone can bring about social change.
